Street food market and taproom planned for former garage site by renowned pub

The former garage site next to the Prince Albert pub in Trafalgar Street in Brighton is at the centre of plans for a new food hall concept currently before the council.

The food hall plans are backed by a Sussex brewery and would see the former garage site transformed with a number of kitchens and craft beers.

Under the new plans the former garage would be turned into Beak Social Club, a seated street food market with four kitchens and craft beer on tap run by Lewes-based Beak Brewery.

Visual renderings of the building show a large, open plan seating area surrounded by kitchen stalls.

Residents commenting on the planning application said they thought the building would make an “excellent venue for a street food market”.

One commenter added: “The location seems eminently suitable, and I have no doubt that if allowed to go ahead this will become an important part of Brighton’s thriving food and drink scene.

“This will attract more visitors to the city, especially thanks to it’s closeness to the station and bus links, and as such I’m sure it will have a positive impact on the city’s wider economy.”

The venue is also applying for an alcohol license for the premises.

The garage site had previously been at the centre of controversy over plans for flats on the site which some said put the Prince Albert pub at the risk of closure.

A petition to “save” the pub garnered a wave of public and political support which lead to plans for the neighbouring venue being rejected by Brighton and Hove City Council.

Beak Brewery already runs a similar taproom and street food canteen in Cliffe Industrial Estate in Lewes which hosts live music, food such as pizza and burgers and screens for live sporting events.

The taproom opened in 2021.
